Gentoo

Gentoo is a Linux and FreeBSD distribution known mostly for its package manager, a system named Portage. Portage downloads and compiles most software from source code, so Gentoo systems are automatically optimized for their specific hardware.

Portage allows a Gentoo system to be customized as a desktop computer, a server, an embedded system, or as any other role. It also gives the user full control over what software is installed, and what services are running. This flexibility leads Gentoo to call itself a "meta-distribution".

Because Gentoo is intended for many different types of systems, there are no default desktop managers or GUI tools, and most of the system tools are designed to be used from the command line. This means Gentoo has a steeper learning curve than other distributions, but it also has thorough documentation and an active support community.
