One of the major advantages open source Content Management System (CMS) software has over commercial versions is complete customization. All CMS software will claim it can be tailored to fit a specific business but, commercial software can only go so far. The software can be modified for specific processes but the tasks within that process are often rigidly set. If there are functions a business doesn't need, the user interface will still present the options necessary to the task. The users are simply expected to ignore them.
Open source CMS software is fully customizable. Adding and removing features is often simply a matter of installing or removing a module. Sometimes, removing a specific feature from within a module may be what is desired and this can be accomplished by modifying the application code. With a little planning, open source CMS software can be completely optimized for a company's specific needs.
